During an internship at karlssonwilker, Inc. I was responsible for developing a
signage system at the Remai Modern Art Gallery in Saskatoon, SK. I expanded
the existing brand guidelines to the main entrance sign, gallery signs, pictograms,
and wayfinding signage at the museum. This involved interpreting
complex technical drawings to understand the space and the signs required,
developing a consistent visual hierarchy, and ensuring that accessibility standards
were being met. I developed a unique set of wayfinding pictograms that
were based on the corporate typeface in order to maintain visual harmony
without sacrificing clarity.

This project also provided a unique opportunity to become informed about
some of the indigenous cultures of Saskatchewan. Among the museum’s primary
principles are to critically examine dominant definitions of “modern”
from multiple cultural and historical positions and to become a leading centre
for contemporary Indigenous art and discourse. With support from language
consultants and research I designed a hearth space which reads “welcome” in
each of the indigenous languages of Saskatchewan, intended by the museum
to be a gathering space for discussion and community members alike.
